Lombardy in Italy was the hardest hit region by the coronavirus pandemic. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has already described the pandemic as the “defining health crisis of our times”. The country which ranks second in healthcare facilities in the world was brought to its knees.
Italy was at the third stage of virus transmission. Meaning, the virus was being transmitted from one person to another. Every individual who came in contact with the infected person was at risk, therefore, quarantined for 14 days. People were confined to their homes, social gatherings, schools, parks, theaters, restaurants were shut down. Residents had to show forms issued by the government, filled with a good reason to leave their homes. Hospitals were overwhelmed with patients. Doctors were working more than 16-18 hours a day. The death rate was spiking. Doctors had to decide to help patients based on their survival rate. The maximum number of deaths was among the elders and people with pre-existing health conditions. All the socializing was limited to everyone’s balcony. Videos of Italians singing, dancing on their balconies was all over social media. Other countries took lessons from Italy’s situation to protect their own people.
In the third week of March 2020, Italy was overtaken by America. The death toll is on the rise in the States. India had already announced countrywide lockdown as a measure to control the pandemic. America was late and now things seem out of hand. So far, Italy has 80,589 coronavirus cases. Out of which, there are 62,013 active cases. Italy has seen 8,215 deaths in a span of 41 days and 10,361 recovery cases. The ratio of new recoveries and new cases has a high discrepancy every day.
Italy is still reeling with the effects and has novelty cases every day. America, France, Spain, Iran are a few more countries whose condition is worsening drastically. Thousands of people are stranded, away from their family and country waiting to return home. People are pledging donations for relief funds. Everyone is waiting for things to get back to normal.
