Mahabalipuram – Perfect place to explore culture and a spot for water sports 

Mahabalipuram is a Tamil city also known as Mamallapuram which is located around 60 km south of Chennai. It is well known for its stone carvings, scenic Mahabalipuram beach and magnificent history that has carved this city into a grandeur. The history of the city can be traced back to the 7th century during the reign of Pallava dynasty in Tamil Nadu. The structures here are one of the finest examples of Trevanion architecture. 

The city is a homage to its cultural beliefs that have built some beautiful Mamallapuram temples that one must visit when in Mahabalipuram. One of the best Mahabalipuram Temples is called the Shore Temple. It is the oldest structure in the city which was built in the 8th century AD and has been there for more than 1400 years. There is a Shiva Lingam which is enshrined inside the building. A large number of crowds gather every weekend to pay their respect to the deities of the temple. This Mamallapuram temple has also been classified as a UNESCO site. 

Temples in Mahabalipuram

Thirukadalmallai Temple is devoted to lord Vishnu. Built by king Pallava, this temple is a treasury of its culture and heritage. It was made to safeguard the sculptures from the ocean and it is believed that the remaining architecture of the temple was built on and not eroded by the sea. It is a beautiful temple that one should visit while in MamallapuramMahabalipuram Temples are not the only cultural heritage that Mahabalipuram offers. Five Rathas is also known as paanch paandava ratha, is a monument complex filled with the culture that Mamallapuram has to offer. It is called the Five Rathas because it has structures of chariots dating back to the seventh century. The sculptures kept here resemble phenomenal stone animals which also includes a large elephant. 

Descent of the Ganges is a majestic relief that was carved in the mid-seventeenth century. The relief is a picture tale of Ganga coming down to earth from heaven as well as Arjuna’s penance carved into it. The artwork is magnificent and is 100 feet long and 15 feet high. Mahabalipuram beach is famous for its surfing. There are many shops providing surfing gears to its customers.
